Chapter Eighteen

Lawless

Falmear stood silently in the concealing shadow of a large evergreen. He was waiting for one of Murgore’s servants to get close. He needed to find an isolated soul to fight. If two came across him at once one could escape and warn the others of his new intensions, and he would never stand a chance against all of them. As he waited, a little white shadow appeared from behind the trees. He could tell at once it was some kind of spirit, but he had never seen anything like it. Transparent fur covered its entire body and two large ears stuck straight up from it’s head.

Slowly, cautiously Fal knelt down beside it. The little creature hardly moved. Gently Fal reached out and picked it up. It was as soft as it had looked. Fal could make out deep gashes across it’s back which leaked golden dust as he lifted it. Without healing it wouldn’t last long.

‘Kill her. She is one of them,’ a voice called. Fal looked up and saw Ellen. He knew instantly that was her name, yet he could not remember how he knew. Had he met her before? The warrior soul struggled towards him, covered in golden gashes. He was surprised she had survived. The warriors were disposable, and were not expected to have made it through the initial battle.

‘Some of these people have animal souls,’ she gasped, collapsing at his feet. As he looked down on her the red crystal that was tied around his neck began to glow and suddenly he remembered.
